Living in South Florida has its rewards and its setbacks. Especially in the past few years have the hurricanes become one of the setbacks. In order to reduce some of the stress it is imperative to prepare in advance and have a plan of action.

Long before the threat is upon you, it is good to make up a box of important papers. If you typically keep papers such as birth certificates, marriage license and insurance papers in a special file you may want to have duplicates in the file and the originals in a ready to go water tight container. There may also be some precious photos or family keepsake that you don't want damaged or lost.

Make yourself a list of the important things at a time when you aren't hurried. That way you can have it well thought out. Keep the list on the fridge, and when you think of something else add it on. Now put a copy of that list in your water tight container. When packing up to either evacuate or just to hunker down for the storm you can take extra precautions with the things most needed and precious to you.

In your container, you might include a flashlight, battery operated radio, list of medicines along with dosages, some old rags, rain ponchos, first aid kit cell re-charger and extra batteries. A list of important phone numbers is extremely important too. Numbers such as your insurance agent, the neighbor, doctors, local authorities are examples of ones you may need. If you are forced to or choose to evacuate, you can make contact from wherever you end up.

Never, ever take those things out of the container except to update them. How often have we needed something, scavenged it from our supply only to not have it when we needed it most?

Just taking a few moments at a non critical time can save us from an outrageous hassle during a critical time. If you must evacuate or should you choose to you'll have the peace of mind in knowing that the truly important things are already taken care of.
